SNOWMOBILING, Snow Mobile Rentals & Trails

Kids and Adults can enjoy snowmobiles in the Forest. Whether you want to have a guided ride, or adventure out on your own, there are many choices. There are several choices from local vendors who offer different kinds of packages and rentals.

The difference will be the scenery, but the thrill will be the same. The Inyo National Forest offers over 100 miles of groomed snowmobile trails leading to nearly 100,000 acres of varied terrain for off-trail snowmobiling. Terrain from wide open meadows to forested areas, to hills and bowls challenge the beginner and the expert. Snowmobile Trails are well marked and as this is snow country, folks ride almost every day.

The Mammoth Snowmobile Association in partnership with the Inyo National Forest marks trails that are designated for snowmobiles with orange diamonds. Some of the trails are groomed and some are not. These trails are also shared with other users such as hikers, snowshoers, and skiers, but are closed to wheeled vehicle snowmobile rides.

If adventuring off on your own, is not your thing, you can join a guided snowmobile tour. With one of the largest trail systems in the Eastern High Sierra, you can rise from an elevation 7600' up to 9104' and see some majestic panoramic views. Depending on your tour, you may see five mountain ranges or ride in one of four huge play areas. There are several points of interest along the way: Vista Point, Lookout Mountain, Dry Creek, Bald Mountain Log Cabin Warming Hut, Inyo Craters, and the Hot Creek Geological Site all easily accessed by snowmobile. Each vendor offers different on an hourly, half-day, or daily rate. There are guided Dinner Rides for large groups, special tours to places you can't get to in the winter such as the Bodie Ghost Town or you may just want to take a spin with the Family on a ride the kids will get to enjoy.

As you cruise over the snow with the rush of crisp, cold air on your face there are over 75,000 acres of open expanse are waiting to be explored. The local snowmobile association offers organized rides and tours, and snowmobile rentals, service and repairs are available in Mammoth.

The Mammoth Visitor Center and Ranger Station located at the entrance to town on State Highway 203 offers a "Winter Recreation Map" for your trip planning and information on guide services, special events, current trail conditions and regulations.
