MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN, Mammoth Lakes, CA

Mammoth Mountain is fantastic! The town of Mammoth Lakes in the heat of the Eastern Sierra, is the home of the Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort. The mountain itself is very large and actually composed of several different smaller mountains all along the John Muir Wilderness and Pacific Crest Trail which runs from Canada to Mexico. The mountain and the development of the town of Mammoth Lakes has a long history all started by founder Dave McCoy.

Winter in Mammoth is composed of many activities but for the regulars and locals, all center around skiing or snowboarding, To see what the hill looks like in either winter or summer, you can check out the Mammoth Web Cams to get a look. They are cool and you can control them yourself. Popular activities in winter also include renting snowmobiles and taking dog sled rides. Kids often go off into the forest to go sledding or snow tubing, anywhere they can find a clearance of trees. Mammoth gets more snow than any other California resort because of the higher elevation, however as the Mountain is located in the desert, the temperatures are not severe. Mammoth can average 400 or more inches of snow per year and is often open through Memorial Day, when most other west coast ski resorts have long been closed. Last Days of Winter at MammothThe bikini run on the last day or near last day is a favorite when temperatures can get into the 60's, yet there is still snow on the ground.

Summer is actually even more gorgeous than winter, although the skiers would argue that one. Mammoth is the east side of Yosemite, so we get the same climate in the summer as our popular neighbor. Summer temperatures are warm in the 80's with nights being a bit chilly. The most popular summer activities around being outdoors and are hiking, camping, fishing and once the snow is melted, the ski resort becomes a world class mountain bike park with trails for all levels. Bikes are loaded on the chair lifts... and up they go for a thrill ride down. The gondola also operates in summer so you can ride to the top to take pictures and see the view. Mt. Whitney and the Minarets are popular photo shots.

Mammoth is known for its lakes basin, and there are 6 lakes to fish on, or hike around. You can also rent paddle boats on Lake Mary, or canoe, or kayak and Lake Mary is a popular place for a Mammoth Wedding. There are also short and long day trips outside of Mammoth. Mammoth also offers adventure guides for those who want an experience that is out of the ordinary.

One of the most spectacular times to come to Mammoth is in autumn. The trees turn the whole Eastern Sierra into a blazing storm of reds, yellows and orange. The forest service monitors the changing of the leaves and on a day by day list, denote which areas have the best color. Beaver Pond at Lundy Lake October is usually the month, and usually the first week so if you need an after summer getaway, coming up to see the trees is ideal. It is truly magnificent and even though the weather starts to get cool, you can still do all the same activities as in summer. You'll just need a sweater.
