MONO MILLS

A former railroad Logging operation, the Mono Mills Historic District contains the townsite of Mono Mills and remnants of its sawmill and railroad grades. From 1881 to 1917, this system harvested, milled, and transported lumber and firewood to the nearby gold Mining town of Bodie.

There are no standing buildings or structures, but many of their remains can be seen and are within easy walking distance of the highway and the area's present dirt logging roads. There are no developed trails within the district. Two historic markers commemorating Mono Mills are located at a paved parking area identified by a Forest Service sign for the town and mill site.

Mono Mills is located adjacent to Highway 120, about 8 miles east of its junction with 395. The junction is 0.4 miles south of the north end of the June Lake Loop, on the south side of Mono Lake. All that remains is some scattered rubble of the sawmill, railroad ties lining the railroad grade, and tree stumps, all scattered about the second growth pine forest.
