HAYDEN CABIN
Historical Site
Early in this century, the Forest Service encouraged citizens to build their own summer homes on lands administered by the U.S. Forest Service. As populations increased and the popularity of vacationing in the mountains boomed, these prime recreation spots became desirable for other public uses. Built during the 1920s and owned by the flamboyant southern Californian, Emmet Hayden, this log cabin represents the early days of recreational residences on Forest Service administered lands. Though declining in number, recreation residences continue as a use of public lands and reflect a time in the U.S. Forest Service's history when the forests were little-used for recreation.
Hayden Cabin has been stabilized and restored as a joint project of the Forest Service and the Southern Mono Historical Society. Inside is a small museum featuring artifacts and historical information.
The cabin is located in the town of Mammoth Lakes, near Mammoth Creek Park on Old Mammoth Road.
