Fishing Stocking Schedule
The Town of Mammoth Lakes, and the Department of Fish and Game have a very well defined "fishing
enhancement" program. Believing that fishing is important to our ecomonmy, they fill
the major lakes with trout, which have been grown in local hatcheries, such as the
infamous trophy Alpers Trout". The lakes are filled in rotation on Thursdays. This
is the stocking schedule as published by the Mammoth Sports Fishing Association,
dates subject to change.
Mike Seefeldt, Fish Hatchery Manager
from the Hot Creek Hatchery and Department of Fish and Game (DFG)
reports that their annual allotment for catchable trout is 250,000
pounds, but DFG usually raises more. They also plant about 15,000
pounds of fish in the 2 to 5 pound range. DFG also stocks over 100,000
fish for Crowley Lake. This link will take you to the
Department
of Fish and Game, Mono County stocking schedule. These are smaller
fish about 5 oz. each and placed each fall for the next season.
Mt. Whitney Hatchery produce about 170,000 pounds of catchables
each year, plus excess brood stock. Fish Springs produces about
300,000 pounds of catchable trout.
That's a lot of fish... so we don't want to hear about getting
'skunked out'. And.. we have included the Alpers Trophy Trout as
well.
If you don't know
about Alpers, well then you just don't know about these prized 3-10
pounders.
