Mammoth Marathons & Triathlons
Running USA is big in Mammoth. We support their efforts to bring high
altitude training to the Eastern Sierra region. Here are some running
events you may want to participate in. All are open to the public.

Mammoth
Lakes Challenge Triathlon - August 2, 2008
Set at 7000 feet in the Eastern Sierras with sweeping mountain views, you'll start the swim at the naturally hot spring warmed Whitmore Pool. There will be 2 swimmers per lane with 6 lanes for swimming. A new wave will begin each 10 minutes. The bike ride will take you out Benton Crossing Road, an excellently paved road. It's relatively flat with little vehicle traffic. The run will start from the Whitmore Pool parking lot and follow a two mile loop of relatively flat dirt roads.

Quake & Shake -
August 3, 2008 -
Set in the Eastern Sierras at 8000 feet, just north of Mammoth Lakes, CA.,
this is a course with a little bit of everything! Each race starts from
the Inyo Craters parking lot. Aide stations and mileage markers provided.
Also, lots of trail/course markers at every juncture or split.

This race begins at the Inyo Craters Parking Lot and follows dirt roads and trails
around Deer Mountain to make a scenic and fun 6.2 mile run. An aide station, lots
of mileage markers and direction flagging and arrows make this an easy to follow
course.

This race is two loops of the 10K course, plus .8 added on to make it 13.1 miles.
The 10K course starts at the Inyo Craters Parking Lot and follows roads and trails
with mileage markers and direction signs and arrows. There will be an aide station
at the 2 mile mark, 4.5 mile area, and the turn around (6.2 mile). mark)

Footloose / Charthouse
5k - 10K Road Run 5K Walk - August 10,2008
Every year Footloose and Charthouse pair up for these runs to raise money for
the Mammoth Local Youth Athletic Programs. These fun runs are for everyone including
walkers. The 5k & 10K and the 5K walk all start at 8:00AM in the Charthouse parking
lot, with pre-registration at 6:45 day of, or in Footloose prior to race date.
Pancake breakfast is served at the end of the run. cost is $22. with the T-shirt

Mammoth
Pass Triathlon - August 24, 2008
The Mammoth Pass Triathlon features a
quarter mile swim in Horseshoe Lake, a 6 mile mountain bike ride (three loops
on a 2 mile single track/dirt road trails) and a two mile loop run up Mammoth
Pass Trail to finish back at Horseshoe Lake. Set at 9,000 feet in the spectacular
Mammoth Crest area of the Eastern Sierras, this race is "short" in name only.
There will be the individual race, called the Gruelathon. There are also teams, either
Grunt Teams or Grunt Family Teams. Grunt Teams can consist of two to three people
participating in any venue of the race. Grunt Family Teams are members of a family,
regardless of age or relationship, competing in the race. Hope to have Grunt Family
This event, sponsored and helped made possible by Coldwell Banker of Mammoth Lakes,
features a 1/4 mile swim, followed by a 6.0 mile mountain bike ride around Horseshoe
Lake (3 laps), followed by a 2 mile run up to and around the McCleod Lake area. The
course it set at 9,000 feet adjacent to the Sierra Crest, just above the town of
Mammoth Lakes. There will be an aide station centrally located for all participants.
There are course monitors, mileage markers, and lots of flagging and cones to keep
participants on the course. There are at two kayaks in the water to ensure everyone's

This race is exactly like the Gruelathon, except that each leg will be run by a different
individual (or one individual can do two parts.) There are no limitations to the
type or age of groups. The Grunt Teams start simultaneously with the other participants.
