MAZANAR HISTORICAL SITE

Manazanar Historical Site is a part of the National Park Service. A War Relocation Center was one of ten camps at which Japanese American citizens and resident Japanese aliens were interned during World War II. Located at the foot of the imposing Sierra Nevada in eastern California's Owens Valley, Manzanar has been identified as the best preserved of these camps.

This is the site of the First World War II Japanese-American relocation camp. From 1942-1045, more than 10,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry were housed here. The remote and sage covered lands at the base of the scenic eastern Sierra escarpment were transformed into a living city with barbed wire fencing and row upon row of barracks. Nowadays, the visible remains include the cemetery, the old guardhouse, and numerous recently uncovered water gardens built by the internees. The site is open daily and a self tour map and information is provided at the gate. Manzanar is located 9 miles north of Lone Pine or 6 miles south of Independence along the west side of Highway 395.
